Empowering Foster Kids to Define Relationships

We are sometimes asked whether or not foster kids should call their foster parents mom or dad. This should be handled on a case-by-case basis and should be informed by the child’s preferences.

Some kids may want to call their foster parents mom or dad, as it may provide them with a feeling of security and attachment to their caregivers. Other children may prefer to refer to their foster parents more formally. Ultimately, the child should call their foster parents whatever they would like to. It is more important to ensure that all of the adults involved are on the same page when it comes to the child’s care.

Children in the foster care system have already been through so much. The foster parents’ relationship should revolve around supporting the child in having the healthiest childhood possible.
