What to Do if You Forget Your Child’s Inhaler

Nobody means to leave it behind, but it is important to talk about what to do if your child experiences asthma symptoms and the inhaler is nowhere to be found. If your child experiences acute symptoms of asthma and their inhaler is not with them, call 911 immediately.

While you wait for medical assistance, the best thing you can do is to remain calm. While this is easier said than done, staying calm is the best way for your child to breathe more easily. They will have difficulty relaxing if they see you panic. Put your child in an upright seated position to encourage deep breaths. Then coach them in breathing slowly and deeply along with you. It is also important to try to identify anything that could have triggered the symptoms, like smoke from a campfire, and to try to remove your child from any triggers possible.

We understand that this can be a scary situation for any parent. The best thing you can do is to call for help and keep things calm. This will ensure that any anxiety does not exacerbate the symptoms.
