Keeping Your Children Safe From Human Traffickers

Talking about human trafficking isn’t easy, but it is something that impacts millions of people around the world every year. Dr. Sarah Garwood, Adolescent Medicine Specialist at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, explains what human trafficking is, what methods they use to lure victims, and how to keep your children safe. Human trafficking involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. They often use methods such as violence, manipulation, or false promises of money to lure victims. One of the main ways they reach out to teens is online. Discuss with your kids how they can be safe while on social media or playing games and what warning signs to look for. If you are concerned someone in your community is being trafficked, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
