Ask the Experts: Navigating Back-to-School Decisions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

With the COVID-19 pandemic unexpectedly closing schools early this spring, many parents are wondering if it’ll be safe to send their kids back to class in the fall. School districts are making some difficult decisions around classrooms, sports and other activities. This leaves parents, students, and teachers with questions about schools resuming classes this fall and how best to support our kids.

Listen as Drs. Rachel Orscheln and Jason Newland, Washington University pediatric infectious disease specialists from St. Louis Children’s Hospital, offer their advice for students of all ages. Topics include safety precautions, disease transmission in kids, testing and masking recommendations, as well as both in-person classes and virtual learning.

Vaccines and boosters for all eligible ages are available through several BJC HealthCare locations, other members of the Pandemic Task Force, or retail pharmacies and vaccine sites across the region. Some pediatrician or primary care offices may also offer the COVID-19 vaccine to their patients, so check with your doctor as well!
